Playful references.

At the heart of the concept is the idea of Budapest as an emerging modern metropolis – shaped by the Millennium era, a period in which the city underwent profound transformation and established itself as a vibrant European capital. The design draws on Budapest’s metropolitan identity at the turn of the century, a time when technological innovation, urban expansion and civic progressivism left a lasting mark on the cityscape. Budapest's historic M1, the first underground railway on the European mainland, is a key motif that serves as a central design reference. It is reflected in the network of yellow lines stretching across the ceiling – quite literally the common thread that ties the design concept together – as well as in subtle references to grab handles and rails. Another layer of the narrative draws on Budapest’s iconic bridges and their distinctive steel structures, expressed in the choice of materials and finishes, particularly in the bar area, which features industrial elements.

The concept also engages with Erzsébetváros, one of Budapest’s most dynamic districts, whose rapid development played an important role in the city’s evolution into a modern metropolis. Named after Empress Elisabeth — better known as Sisi – the district provides a further narrative layer. Sisi is referenced through a series of playful yet subtle gestures that connect local history with contemporary ideas of freedom, movement and self-expression. These include a large-scale graffiti mural by local artist Áron Hidvégi, a contemporary reinterpretation of an imperial gallery wall, and gymnastic rings in the meeting area that allude to her well-known passion for physical activity.

In addition, the design draws on the history of the specific location, which formerly housed a ballet school. Ballet barres, graphic depictions of dancers and movement-inspired motifs carry this past forward, particularly in the elevator area.

Strong contrasts.

The colour scheme and the material concept are defined by a dark overall atmosphere. Grey flooring, black walls and a black ceiling create a restrained backdrop that allows individual zones and elements to stand out. Neon yellow serves as a recurring accent colour, referencing the metro theme, while green draws a link to the bridges. The robust cast concrete floors are complemented by wood and leather, bringing warmth, softness and a sense of elegance to the space. Mosaic-like tiles pay homage to Budapest’s long-standing bathing culture.

Individual adjustments.

BWM’s main design focus was on the public areas. In rooms with non-standard layouts – suites, in particular – BWM further refined and adapted the existing Moxy design, introducing adjustments to the furniture concept as well as room dividers and desks to create more individual and functional configurations.
